Seminar Abstract

We articulate the principal components of success for using health care systems as living laboratories for discovery. In this context genomic measurement techniques, although important, take the backseat to several significant challenges. The first is extracting robust phenotypes from the narrative descriptions generated through clinical care. The second is assembling the often bewildering variety of analytic packages into a useable clinical research chart. The third is mobilizing patient populations and their clinicians to conduct research in a manner that is consistent with ethical/consent guidelines and yet avoids the various methodological landmines. We argue that we are developing a model that is competitive at the scientific and resource level with both randomized control trials and traditional cohort studies.
